The idea behind My Many Selves

A center from which to direct and manage.

It's like an orchestra. Our many selves are the different instruments, and the Higher Self is the conductor, directing and managing how they come together. Each instrument has its own range, tones, and resonance. Naming it does not tell us everything it can express.

Or think of a solar system, with the Higher Self as the sun at the center. These are images through which we explore a central organizing presence and the many selves moving in relationship with it.

Exploring the horizontal and vertical dimensions

Horizontally, we explore our roles and archetypes: mother, father, victim, lover, student, child, martyr, hero, businessman, businesswoman, and many more. Vertically, we explore dimensions of being: physical, emotional, mental, sexual, spiritual, and others we may come to recognize.

Each dimension has its own depths. Physical being has depth; emotional being has depth. None is inherently superior to another. A mother, a lover, or a student may express through several of these dimensions at once.

A Cartesian plane can help us begin to imagine these two directions, with the Higher Self at the center, the zero-zero point. But the plane flattens what we are exploring. It cannot fully represent the depths within each dimension, or the ways our selves overlap and move. We use it as a starting point for exploration, not a complete representation of who we are.

The three guiding questions

The questions we keep returning to.

Whether you arrive through science, spirituality, or your own lived experience — these three questions are the compass of the podcast.

01

Which self is speaking right now?

  • The one protecting me
  • The one seeking approval
  • The one trying to prove something
  • The one caring for others
  • The one wanting to explore
  • The one carrying an old hurt
  • The one able to step back and choose
02

What is this self speaking from?

  • Safety & survival
  • Attachment & desire
  • Identity & agency
  • Relationship & care
  • Truth & expression
  • Insight & discernment
  • Wholeness & larger perspective
03

Is this self expressing more of who I am, or narrowing who I can be?

  • Am I seeing more possibilities?
  • Can I hear another perspective?
  • Am I responding to now or reliving then?
  • Can I care without abandoning myself?
  • Does this serve what matters to me?
  • Can I change direction?
  • Am I choosing, or being carried along?

Episode 17: One Person’s Remedy Is Another’s Slow Poison: The Fallacy of One-Size-Fits-All Healing

We already know that one size does not fit all. Yet in matters of physical, mental, and emotional healing, we continue treating the diagnosis as though it tells us everything about the person. In this episode, Damaris Nightingale explores a vital but often overlooked truth: a food, herb, supplement, or therapy that heals one person may slowly disturb another. Through her own experience with unexplained burn-like marks and intense internal heat, she reveals what happened when supposedly “healing” foods proved incompatible with her constitution. Drawing from Traditional Chinese Medicine, BaZi, Sasang Constitutional Medicine, Eight Constitution Medicine, Ayurveda, and modern epigenetics, Damaris examines how ancient systems recognized the individuality that standardized treatment often overlooks. She also introduces Numinax, her developing constitutional framework for bringing this knowledge into a more accessible and calculable form. Because the real question is not simply, “Does this remedy work?” It is: “For whom, in what amount, and for how long?” The system may provide the map, but the individual’s response remains the final authority.

Episode 8: Missing the Forest For the Tree

Episode 8: Missing the Forest For the Tree

Are you looking for perfection in me… while I am trapped in this temporary abode?” Have you ever become so focused on one flaw that you stopped seeing everything else? Have you ever been reduced to your worst mistake, your greatest weakness, or one “ugly and rugged tree,” while the rest of your forest remained unseen? In this deeply personal episode of My Many Selves, Damaris Nightingale shares the story behind her poem “Missing a Beautiful Forest Because of One Ugly Tree.” What began as the pain of being constantly criticized became a profound lesson about relationships, self-worth, compassion, and the way we judge ourselves and others. Together, we’ll explore why our minds naturally fixate on defects, why we spend so much of our lives “looking for perfection,” and why imagination and reality are not the same. We’ll also take a fresh look at karma. Is it really a simple system of reward and punishment? Or is life shaped by countless interacting conditions, where one act of kindness, one habit, one choice, or one relationship never tells the whole story? Perhaps the greatest tragedy is not that we have rugged trees. It is that we become so captivated by them that we never discover the vast forest, “beautiful and bold, with so much to explore and to behold.” This episode is an invitation to adjust “the lenses of your heart” and begin seeing yourself and others with greater wisdom, compassion, and wholeness.
